This website is supposed to be my portfolio. I think it’s more of a growth chart for my art. The learning never stops. My art is always evolving. Here you’ll find some of my favorite pieces alongside poems, written excerpts, and anecdotes. I hope this space can be a place where I can express myself freely and a place you can visit and share in my growth, glow, love, laughter, and healing!
My name is Ammany Ty. I am a second generation Cambodian American daughter of refugees. I graduated from UMass Boston with a degree in English and a program-of-study in Asian American Studies.
While I have never studied art formally, my passion for art and storytelling has brought me back time and time again. When I am tired, overjoyed, or grieving the weight of life, I find comfort in putting pen/paint/stylus to paper. There’s a different kind of joy in each medium. Right now, I work to produce videos. In my free time I am writing, painting with acrylics, watercolors, and gouache. I’ve recently picked up digital illustrating. Oftentimes, they all come together through my multimedia performance pieces and spoken word poetry.
Art, for me, has always been very personal.
Coming from a community that carries with it so much trauma and silence, I have found art to be healing for both me and my community. My hope as an artist is to be able to capture the voices in my community and honor their stories and their lives through my illustrations.
Although it is a goal that is larger than myself and my art, I hope to contribute to the effort of uplifting the voices of those marginalized. I want my community and communities alike to be heard, seen, and felt. I believe that is the stepping stone for change. In my own small way, I do this through my art.
